What does the Basic Fire Safety Awareness for Care Homes course cover?
Care homes carry a level of fire risk that most workplaces never face. Residents may be asleep, living with dementia or unable to move without help, so care staff need more than a generic fire briefing. This online fire safety awareness course for care homes covers the same core training as our standard fire awareness course, with additional content written specifically for people working in care settings.
Across six modules your staff will learn how fire starts and spreads, the most common causes of fire and how to cut the risk of each one, and why smoke is often the biggest danger of all. The course also walks through the safety features of the building itself, then covers what to do from the moment a fire is discovered, including how the main types of fire extinguisher work and when each one should be used.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires every employer to provide fire awareness training for all staff, and in the care sector that duty is taken especially seriously. Each module ends with a short test with a 70 percent pass mark, the whole course takes around an hour, and learners receive a certificate on completion. The course is CPD and IOSH approved, with IIRSM and Gatehouse Awards recognition too.

How is this different from the standard fire awareness course?
It covers the same core content, then adds material tailored specifically to working in a care home, where residents often need help to evacuate and the stakes are higher.
How long does the course take?
Around 60 minutes of video content across six modules. Staff work through it online at their own pace, so it fits around shifts.
Is the course approved?
Yes. The course is CPD and IOSH approved and also carries IIRSM and Gatehouse Awards approval.
Do care home staff legally need fire training?
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to provide fire awareness training for all staff, and that applies fully to care homes. Inspections in the sector will expect to see training records.
How is it assessed and what is the pass mark?
There is a short test at the end of each module with a pass mark of 70 percent. Learners are certificated on completion.
Can I put my whole staff team through it?
Yes. You can enrol as many staff as you need, including nights and agency cover, and everyone trains in their own time. Contact us for larger group bookings.

We work in partnership with VideoTile Learning to deliver online IOSH Approved Working Safely and Managing Safely. The courses are delivered via their platform. As an agent for these courses we are not directly approved by or associated with IOSH.
IATP, CPD, IIRSM, IFE, ILM and IOSH approved courses are owned and delivered by VideoTile Learning Ltd and are distributed under licence.
Laser, ETA and IOSH Qualifications are examined via VideoTile Learning Ltd.
Refunds and cancellation
- Courses are supplied by VideoTile Learning Ltd. Your purchase is with them, and their terms and refund policy apply to it.
- An unused licence can be removed from an account within 14 days of being added, providing the account has not been accessed by the candidate or business. Beyond 14 days the system will restrict this activity.
- No refund is granted where there is reason to believe the learner has viewed any of the content they purchased.
- Consumers have a 7 day cooling off period in which to cancel and receive a refund, with no reason needed. These regulations do not govern contracts between businesses.
- VideoTile Learning Ltd reserves the right to charge a handling fee of 15 percent of the original fee. Refunds are paid within 30 days of cancellation.
