What does the Fire Marshal course cover?
Every workplace must have enough trained people to lead the response if fire breaks out, and this online fire marshal training course prepares your nominated staff for that responsibility. Sometimes called fire wardens, fire marshals are the people who raise the alarm, guide colleagues to safety and help make sure everyone is accounted for once the building is clear.
The course runs across 16 modules with around three and a half hours of video content. It starts with the fundamentals, including how fire behaves, the common causes of workplace fires and the safety features built into buildings. It then moves into the ground a marshal needs to own, covering current fire safety legislation, fire risk assessment, preventative measures, the role of the fire marshal itself, action on discovering a fire, and how to run fire drills and evacuations. The final modules cover fire extinguishers in detail, from choosing the right type to using one correctly, and the extinguisher use module carries a 100 percent pass mark.
Every other module is assessed with a 70 percent pass mark, and learners receive a certificate on completion. The course is CPD approved and carries IIRSM, Gatehouse Awards and Institute of Hospitality approval, making it a solid way to meet your duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Frequently asked questions
How long does fire marshal training take?
There is around 220 minutes of video content across 16 modules. It is fully online and self paced, so learners can spread it over several sittings and progress is saved as they go.
Do we legally need fire marshals?
Yes. Workplaces must have a sufficient number of trained people to deal with fire emergencies, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to provide adequate fire training.
How many fire marshals does my business need?
It depends on the size and layout of your premises, how many people are in the building and your shift patterns. Your fire risk assessment should set the number, and it is sensible to train extra people to cover holidays and absence.
Is the course approved?
Yes. The course is CPD approved and also carries IIRSM, Gatehouse Awards and Institute of Hospitality approval.
How is the course assessed?
Each module ends with a test. The pass mark is 70 percent for most modules, rising to 100 percent for the module on using a fire extinguisher, because that knowledge has to be exact.
Is a fire marshal the same as a fire warden?
Yes, the two titles are used interchangeably. Both describe a member of staff trained to help prevent fires and to lead the response during an evacuation.
